DIAMOND DICK, JR.
get in our possession in less than a quar-
ter of an hour. ”
“I have no money to risk on a sure
thing like that, old boy. We must be as
good as our word and give the girl her
two hundred.”
“S11re; and we can well afford to do it,
now.”
Diamond Dick, ]r., smiled to himself.
He wouldn’t have minded taking up
their bet to the tune of a few thousands
just then.
But he had to lie low.
He watched the girl as she went in the
direction of the man who was believed to
have the Turtle nugget.
Bertie was not sure which fellow was
he, till she reached him and spoke to
hin1, and then Bertie made a mental snap-
shot of the face for future reference.
He would know the man again, now.
The girl caught his arm and looked up
playfully into his face, and as soon as the
man saw who it was he grinned broadly.
She piloted him along, chattering
away in a lively manner, and thus held
his attention so that he did not look in
the direction of Chamberton and the
jeweler in passing them.
They took seats at the table that had
been indicated.
Charlotte took it upon herself to order
something, and Bertie and the other
watchers saw her slip some money into
her pick-up’s hand.
This satisfied Bertie of one thing.
The fellow must be still broke, and
had confided the fact to her; and that be-
ing the case, he had not parted with the
nugget-if indeed he had it in his pos-
session at all.
But there seemed to be no doubt of
that.
They were having the best kind of a
time, apparently, and at times the young
woman was almost in the big fellow’s
arms.
No notice was taken of this, in such a

place and in such a crowd, and the watch-
ers were waiting for some sign or signal
from the girl, which presently was given.
Not more than ten minutes had
elapsed.
“Ha!” exclaimed Conkling. “She
signals that he has got it on him.”
“Then it will be on us in less than ten
minutes more, you can play ace high on
it.”
“Yes, I think it will, my friends,”
said Bertie in his mind. “It will be on
you the worst kind of way, if I know
what I’m about..”
“But we have got a bad man there to
tackle,” Conkling added, “if anything
miscarries so as to awaken his suspicion
before we get it into our possession. Can
we do him?"
“We can claim the help of the crowd,
seeing that the nugget is known to be
yours. ”.
“Yes, that’s so. ”
“It is well known here in the city,
now, as it was in that mining camp where
it was discovered.”

“Sure of that?”
“That was her signal.
is a trump, no mistake.”
I tell you she
“just what she is. And now comes
the ticklish part of the business. How
are you going to get the nugget without
his knowing it.”
“Not likely that he knows me, and
I'll stoop to speak to her as I pass along,
just a word, you know; and in saying it
I'll take the nugget out of her hand and
pass it to you.”
“Good enough. I’ll go right on with
it and wait for you, and we will get back
to the Thistle Club as soon as possible.
I’m ready, if you are, for that Turtle
