Directly in the centre of the floor stood
a large, white object, upon which mv
eyes Iiad beoonie riveted the instant I
reached the top of the stairs and looked
around the garret.
the pale rays of the moon, which
was shining through the two windows, I
oould see that the figure was standing
just in front of the pile of corn, an be-
fore I could empty the basket I would
have to pass by it.
“’hilc I thus stood gazing at the appa-
rition, it suddenly, as I supposed, began
moving toward the opposite side oi’ the
oft. 'I‘liis movement on the part of the
ghost created a strange feeling within
I) I became reckless and l'eai'less; or,
in other words, (‘ear gave me courage.
I placed tiic basket on the floor and
started in ursuit. As I advanced, the
ghost seemed to i-eccde, lint at last, how-
ever, I succeeded in getting so near to it
that I could hit it with my list.
I tliei-efoi-e threw all the strength I
could summon into my right arm and
struck out at its back. next ino-
ineiit I wasutterlyiinahletotcll whether 1
I was standing on my feet or my head.
My list had come in sound contact with
3 large oak post which had been placed
in the centre of the floor for some pur-
pose or other when the house was built,
and over which Mrs. Clark had thrown
a bed-sheet. l
As soon as I recovered my senses, I
looked at my knuckles an ounil them
bruised and bleeding, while my whole
arm pained sharply in sympathy with
them.
Just then I heard Clark calling to me,
and so I emptied the corn and returned
in t a barn, where I was compelled to
tell what had ha pened.
Mr. Clark an his wife laughed up-
roariousiy as I related the story, and for
many da s afterwards I was teased un-
merciful y about the ghost in the garret.

BY MARY N. l’RESCD’I"I‘.
Having nothing better to do after
school, Tom and Harry went down into
the wood-lot and set rabbit-traps. There
were not any rabbits about, to-he-sure,
that they knew of, but one niigiit hap-
pen that way. ltabbits lived in the
woods, they had heard, and what fun it
would be to tell the other boys that they
had caught one! '
Every morning, before school, they
went to visit it, and every night, after
the dz y's lessoiis were eiiile .
One morning, they could scarcely be-
lieve their eyes when a 0 little crea-
ture lookcd up at them roin the trap, as
if they were friends who had collie to
help him.
“ He's in my trap, anyway," said
Harry.
“ So he is,” Tom aInswered.
‘ Ben Brooks said we would never

“ 1 wish he had gotten into mine,"
said Tom.
“ I don't,” Harry confessed.
“ Say, Harry, you Just let me make
believe he was can rht in my trap, and
I'll give you my Jae '-knilo." I
“M-avhe I'll catch another," said Har-
ry. “ "Rabbits seem to be thick. Just as
you say, Tom." I I
So Tom had the pleasure of surprising
the whole school with his nck. It was
the iiiiic-days‘ wonder. They talked
about it at recess, they wrote notes about
it in school, they drew rabbits on the
blackboards and made rabbit-traps Sat-
urday afternoons.
