4. The following rules for the conduct of Officers and Men ‘of the A. E. F. within this leave area
are hereby announced : .
A violation of any of these rules will result in the offending officer having his leave immediately
cancelled and being ordered back to his proper station. ‘When such action is taken a letter will be
forwarded to the C. O. of the organization to which the offender is returned with a full ‘statement of
the facts concerning the case. In event the case is flagrant, the Officer will be placed in arrest and
charges preferred against him. The enlisted men will be tried by Summary Court. .
4, Drunkenness and intoxication will not be tolerated.
2. In associating with women care will be exercised that no offence against public morals or
decency is committed. : . OS
3. Noisy and boisterous conduct and the using of obscene language is forbidden.
4, Uniform regulations will be obseryed and in addition hands will not be carried in the breeches
pocket. ~. - ,

5. All regulations concerning military courtesy must be observed and salutes will be rendered
by all officers and men.
6. Cashing worthless cheks is a criminal offense for both officers and men and will be dealt with
accordingly. : mo
71. No officers or enlisted man of the army or navy, civilian employee, or attached uniformed civilian,
of the American Forces will enter any street, house, public place or district placed '’off Limits’ by
.the Provost Marshal.
8. .Soldiers are forbidden either to buy or accept as gifts from inhabitants whiskey, brandy, cham-
pagne, liquors or other alcoholic beverages, other than light wine or beer. (Par. 12, G.O. 77, G.H.Q.,
1917.)
9. No soldiers, sailors, seamen or civilian employees of the A. E. F. Will remain in any café,
restaurant, or other public place where alcoholic beverages are served after closing time prescribed by
French laws, and not later than 12 o’clock midnight. For purposes of recreation enlisted men will be
permitted in the streets till 12 o'clock midnight. / .
40. Hotels, restaurants and cafés which permit excessive drinking, the sale of liquors contrary -
to orders of the A. E. F. and which permit notorious prostitutes to consort with officers and men of
the A. B. F. will be placed ’’Out of Bounds’’ and result in military police being stationed at their doors
to prevent Americans from entering them. ‘
44. The above rules are promulgated in order that a few thoughtless officers and men may not
bring discredit upon the American uniform, and it is especially asked that all cooperate loyally in ~
carrying these rules out, in order that all may enjoy the legitimate pleasures of this leavo area, without.
having to blush for shame and indirectly suffer undeserved restriction through the boorishness of some
of their compatriots.
