and 6. Remove D in a hundred and twenty-eight move-
ments, which is done in the following manner:—Remove .
E DCB A in sixty-eight movements, as in. 5, so ag.
to leave only Eand F; then G from F and G; G from 0.0; .
through F.. Return A BCDE, in sixty-two movements,
through § § 1, 2,3,4 and 5. The ring G being: thus dis-. -
engaged, disengage the others, F E D C B.A, in the same
manner, and successively as is shown in % 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
To calculate the whole: to engage the seven rings,
requires 371 movements; eight rings will require 765 ; nine
rings 1533, ete.: and to disengage them, as many move
ments as to engage them. rn
But it is to be remarked that in the course of the | opera:
tion certain movements may sometimes be omitted, Thus,
when we must raise A and drop it immediately, wecan ‘dis-
pense with one of those movements ; it will be the same.
when the needle O is to be passed at the same time through
Band A, or through C and B, and, must, afterwards be dis-
engaged.
Lastly, not to be obliged to retain i in the memory all the
movements that lead to a result, it is sufficient, to" remem-
ber two principles, by the aid of which w ecan, with proper
attention, be surely guided or. able to disentangle them, af.
ter having committed an error, else we should be lost as in
a labyrinth and unable to resolve doubtful cases,
First. No ring can be raised above or lowered beneath
the needle, unless the nearest of those which precedes It,
and that only, remains, If, for example, you wish to raise
the ring E, then D must already be above tho needle, else
the key D, and D must be alone, forif C, Bor A wereabove .
O, their pins placed outside of E would not leave the ring
E at liberty to be engaged or disengaged with the end of
the needle,
Second. If the ring to be raised or lowered is an odd
one, all those of the odd. rank which precede it must sue:
cessively be lowered. A similar rule prevails with a ring
of the even row; for example, if we-wish to lower G,' we
must lower in the order A, Cand E;if we wish to lower Hi,
we must lower in the order B D Br
