THE HATCHET
“We Cannot Tell A Lie”’
Che Hatchet
oe Established February—1918 oe
A DAILY NEWSPAPER
On “The President’s Ship”
HOMEWARD BOUND
Published on the ‘United States Ship GEORGE
WASHINGTON, distributed free to “all hands”
Capt. Edward McCauley Jr., Commanding
Chaplain P. F. Bloomhardt, Managing Editor
Printed in the Ship's Printing Office by a force
of Navy printers.
News notes and brief writings or suggestions
are invited from all readers who are humorously,
poetically or otherwise inclined. Address
“The Hatchet,”’ Ship’s Post Office
HIGH SEAS, NOVEMBER 22, 1919
To A Dear, Good Friend On Parting.
It has been announced that the ship is
to go out of commission after this voyage.
The Hatchet, our newspaper, goes out of
commission with this number. The ship
would not be the same without the Hat-
chet, nor could the Hatchet go on with-
out the George Washington. This little
paper, issued daily, has been unique.
Other sea newspapers have been printed
and issued on other ships, but we feel
that the Hatchet has been ina class by
itself. It has been an achievement in
daily journalism, It has made many
and an interested reader as has been the
First Lady of our land. A King and
Queen, the King and the Queen to_ us,
have graciously complimented it. Great
men and good men have been its patrons.
Soldiers and sailors, statesmen, diplomats,
financiers, clergy, men and women in all
walks of life have helped us write it, edit
it, and enjoyed reading it with us.
“oo. Editorially_ it -has . -undergone __ many.
dmany ienced
writers have been members of its staff.
No expression of appreciation of The Hat-
chet would be complete without some in-
dication of our estimation of the work of,
and our gratitude to, the Chaplain, to
whom, far more than any one else, isdue
its beginning and its continued success.
He has seen it in its infancy, inits prime,
and now in its retirement. To him be-
long much honor and commendation.
With the bound volumes and numbers
which we have at home among the most
valued of ourmementos of this moment-
ous period in the history of the world
The Hatchet will still live in affectionate
