‘lowing interesting test of Prof. Provacini
8 _ THE KNEIPP WATER CURE MONTHLY.
the result is attained in a most natural way through the
light-bath. In consequence of the opening of the pores
the process of breathing of the skin is relieved also and the
inhalation of oxygen especially during the sun and are
light bath is beneficial. _The light is the highest stimu-
lator for it penetrates into the interior of the body and
causes a complete change of matter and a quickening of
all the functions of all cells without the intervention of
the cerebral and spinal nerve centres, it is evident that
the light causes a direct contradiction of the cell which
proves that change of matter under illumination is
caused by the rays direct. A further effect of the light
bath is that the temperature of the body is raised. Every
touch of chill disappears and an artificial condition of
fever takes its place, a condition the natural Method of
Healing recognizes as the greatest process of healing.
The celebrated Rausse said: “Give me a fever and I will
cure every disease,” and it is true that all chronic dis-
eases never have been cured perfectly without ending
with a fever. Notwithstanding the higher temperature of
the body gained in the light-bath it is to be noted that the
activity of the heart is not at all or very little accelerated,
it is never alarmingly as so often happens in the steam
bath or russian-turkish bath, it is therefore the only safe
sweat bath for a patient to .take, who is. suffering with
organic heart failure. Another important and character-
istic peculiarity of the powcr of the light is the fact that
the quantity of hamoglobin becomes increased as proven
by Prof. Graffenburger (of Germany) by his exact exam-
inations. The hamoglobin being considered the supporter
of oxygen, a greater demand for this important element
of life takes place, whilst on the other side a greater de-
livery of carbon is the result and with this a purification
of this dangerous poison. The light therefore is a direct
agent in producing blood, a process which is analogous
to the formation of the Chlorophill of plants and bears
the same relation in the change of matter in plants as the
hamoglobin in the animal change of matter.
Although we know that bacteria is a result and nota
cause of disease as medical science erroneously contends,
it is of the greatest importance to know that the light
is the greatest enemy of bacteria and bacillii. The fol-
of Naples
shows this conclusively, he filled two reagens tubes with
the dirty water of sewers and exposed both, one was
sticked with black paper all around, to the bright sun-
shine. The two glasses contained quite a number of bac-
teria, after six hours he found that all the bacteria in the
white glass had disappeared whilst the number in the
black glass were about doubled. Dr. Gebhardt infected
rabbits with bacillii of splenitis and kept some animals
in darkness and some in boxes illuminated by electric
light, those who were kept in darkness died after a short
time whilst those in the light boxes lived in health for a
long time until they were killed, the dissection and exam-
ination of both kinds of animal proved that no bacillii
could be found in those who lived in the light boxes but
in the others a large increase of bacillii was the result.
Vortunatcly our method of healing is opposed to such
eruel experiments with living animals as there are
thousands of other more human ones to prove con-.
vincingly the power of light.
There is in the spectral line of the sun light and
electric are light a substance which has an antiseptic
capacity and a remarkable healing power on ulcers, ab-
cesses, purulent wounds, eczema ete. Under the influence
of the light rays we notice very soon new formations of
granulations which lead to a perfect healing up. A lay-
man by the name of Mehl (Berlin) made the discovery
that the concentrated sun rays through a lens had a
splendid healing effect upon the fearful disease lupus. He
suffered himself for many years with lupus in the face
which was declared uncurable by the highest medical
authorities at Berlin, the concentration of the sun rays
as above mentioned restored him entirely, Prof. Leyden
took great interest in his case. At the present time ex-
periments with the electric are light (reflector apparatus)
especially by Prof. Finsen of Copenhagen have given most
promising results. Laurits S. Swenson, U. S. Minister to
Denmark, has recently sent the following report: “More
than three hundred and fifty cases of lupus vulgaris have
been satisfactorily treated by the Light Cure in Dr. Fin-
sen’s Institute.”
The different effects of the light on the human
organism are as we have now learned: stimulating the
change of matter without irritating the nervous system,
blood purifying and blood producing, pain killing, ex-
creting poisonous accumulations, antiseptic and strength-
ening. The light bath has proven to be the best physio-
logical remedy for all chronic diseases, especially Asthma,
Diabetes, Gout and Rheumatism, Sciatica, Paralysis,
Kidney-, Liver- and Stomach-afflictions, Catarrh of the
throat, lungs ete. Skin-diseases, Obesity and Syphilis.
In cases of mercurial poison Dr. Aufrecht of Berlin
proved by analyzing the exudation the amount of mercury
excreted down to the smallest quantity of 0,0024% even
after 10 and 20 years use of mercury. Also with many
acute diseases the Light Cure has been very successful.
Tn cases of small-pox the red light only was effective.
If Goethe’s last words were “More Light” in a spiri-
tual sense, we say here in a physilogical sense “More
Light”.
Hygienic Underwear.
In connection with the gush-treatment the follower of
Kneipp uses what we may term hygienic underwear. Wool
for undereloth does not exist for the Kneipp-follower. He
uses instead porous, dry, strong linen, hemp-cloth, linen-
mash or china-grass. The hairy, greasy wool on the bare
body will suck up the fluids of perspiration; These fluids
will stay in the wool for a long time. They cannot eva-
porate for there is no airing. The wet wool will produce
more perspiration and at the slightest change of tempera-
ture will become cold, stick to the body and will work then
like poultices of long duration, Colds, and with them,
headaches etc., ete., are the consequence. The meshes of
the hygienic underwear on the other side allow the air
to get near the body. Air is a very bad conductor of
heat, consequently hygienic underwear must protect
against cold as well as against heat, without interfering
with the perspiration of the body. This explains the
pleasant sensation of being warm in cold weather and the
exceedingly comfortable feeling during the hot season ex-
perienced by those who wear hygienic underwear. For
warm and hot climates and rapid changes of temperature
the hygienic undergarment is the garment of the future
and the the only recommendable, The greatest benefit the
wearer of hygienic underwear derives from the fact that —
it keeps him warm and always
sequently the body is able to p
benefit which woolen undereclot
keeps the pores open, con-
erspire in a natural way, 2
h never could offer.
