7 VTRAIQEIVGTFHE LEFT HAND.
It is one of the good signs of the times, says the London
Times, that the use of the left liand is coming into fashion
in education. Oilr children, let us hope, are not to be
forever crippled by being brought up “one-lilanded." Weare
learning at last the absurdity of allowing one of our hands to
Iall into practical disuse, and the excellent nanles behind the
newly formed Anlbidextral Culture Society give ground for
hope that common sense may prevail on the subject and lead
to the development of a [W0-llaliltletl instead of a one-lislnded
race. The founder and secretaryof the society, Mr. John
Jackson, has embodied his philosopliy in a highly interesting
book on “Anibidexterity; or, Two-Ilaiidedncss and Two-
liraiiietlnt-ss," to which Major R. S. S. Baden-Powell con-
tribtltes an introduction. The Major, like the late Queen
Victoria, can write with either hand and use the two hands
intercliaiigeably for any purpose. That, of course, is all that
is denuinded.
ADVOCATING Tl-IE SIMPLE BURIAL.
Rev. Charles VVagner has been talking a deal about the
simple life, but Rev. Father McLaughlin, of Adams, Mass.,
is advocating the simple burial. The great evil among his
parishioners is not that they are living beyond their means,
but that they are dyillg too extravagailtly. Accordingly he
has placed a limit on ilorlil offerings at funerals, on the nunl-
hcr of hacks tn be used, etc., so that a poor man can actually
die without cnnsigning his relatives and friends to a blink-
ruptcy court; and the Adams situation does not exist exclu-
sively in that town either. It has its being in every place.
The late Bishop Knight, formerly of St. James’ parish, Lan-
caster, gave a fine exhibition of simplicity in requesting to be
hurled in a plain “rough box" without a coiiiu at all. As
aliotller instance of simplicity which should be imitated, take
the case ot the late Lord Salisbury, Prime Minister of Eng-
land, who requested that the expenses of his funeral should
not exceed $100, and his wish was complied with. But imi‘
toting such examples is a matter of slow growth. Still, it
will collie when men become liiore rational and, therefore, less
vain.
SOME THINGS ARE Cl'lI3APER.
A. E. Oliterbridge,]r., in the Annals of the American
.-Xcarlemy, writes as follows:
When Edison first made the siliall incandescent electric
lamps, consisting of a carbon filaliicnt llxed by platinulii
wires in a pear-shaped glass bulb froln which the air had
hcen exhausted, the cost was $3 each; new there are many
million similar lamps of better quality made each year and
sold at less than 20 cents each.
Forlucrly watches were made by hand and were costly ltlx-
uries; now they are made by niachincry ill lots of a thousand
at a time and the cost of a new watch that will keep fairly
good time is less than the cost of having an expensive watch
cleaned.
The same principles apply in all lines of manufacture, 7
and it has been found that reduction in cost of production,
thin to specialization in manufacture, is naturally followed by
increased demand, for the simple reason that each successive
reduction brings a new class of consiiiiiers or purchasers into
the market, and a commodity which was regarded as a luxury
of the few when the cost was relatively high becomes a
necessity of the many when the cost is reduced to a su&‘i.
ciently low level.
