THE LAST CALL.
The action of the oil-icors and directors of the Young Men's
Cllristilui Association of ower Ierion, of leaving the decis-
ion of lnvi g snc an institution permanently established
here in tlle hands of those who would be nlost hcnclitted
it, we th wise course, That these men should co
clude tllat tlle advantages and plei-lsures which such an
stitutiou would bring to our town prccialed or
wanted is but natural when earnest calls (or inectings for the
perfecting of plans for the same are unheeded.
Those nlen who have worked to forward the project are
right in taking the stand which is explained in a circular
letter which appears in another column.
The “Chronicle” gives the notice prolninencc iii the hope,
which is shared by many, that this forcible appeal will arouse
all those who desire the establishment of every good thing in
Ardlnorc, tllat they in turn may axvnken the interest of tll
many young men in this community who would reap a rich
return in the enjoyment of the benefits and advantages which
a . ll u give hem.

been raised. It now remains for the people to answer the
question, “ ocs Ardlnore ' nt a Young Men's Christian
Association?" and 1 s the olhcers Wlll be guided by the
in bi
manner in which they heed this Enal appeal.
DIFFERENT KN LOVVER MERION.
The startling disclosures made durieg the past two weeks
by Mr. Gibboney, of the Law and Order Society, of the con-
di 'cus existing in Philadelphia. have appalled the contented
citizen, and startled even those who were aware that vice
flourished to some extent. While this condition of social
and municipal nlrnirs in our nellr-by city is attracting the at- C
tentiou of the whole country, we are pleased to pllblisll a re-
port of the committee appointed by the Bryn Mawr Citizens‘
Association to give all possible aid in prosecuting the offend.
ers wllo were caught in the raid of the notorious gambling
house at VVcst Manayunk on July 30th, which shows the
most conlnlcudahle alacrity and efhciency of the heads of our
Township Government, its oiflcials and the Police force.
It is therefore a subject for congratulatlon that, though
vice may be allowed to ilourish in the heart of Philadelphia,
in this colnlnunity the death knell to wrong-doing has
been sounded, and whatever license or protection those who
ply their nefarious trade my and in the city, they have
learned through the prompt action of our Township officials
that it is different in Lower Meriou.

THE VALUE OF HEALTH.
The work of the world cannot be performed without health.
Tnis is the lirst essential. There have, indeed, been :i few
hrilliznlt exceptions, but speaking broadly, no sick man ever
accolllplislled lnnch for mankind. On the other hand, it
would be ditlicnlt to trace the great bulk of the failures, and
the evils or the world to physical or mental weakness, sick-
ness or deformity. There is nothing that can recompense a
man for ill health. Even death is preferable to years of sick- ll '5
ness. A man may be as rich as Rockefeller, but if he can-
not digest his food he is poorer than thelongslloreman whose
strength is nninipaired. W. H. Vanderbilt once complained "
that his great wealth brought him no pleasure because, :11-
though he loved to drive his fast horses, his physician lrnd
coruniatidcd him to walk if he would restore his health.
It is not surprising therefore that a large proportion of the
average man’s income is expended either in the endeavor to
keep well or the endeavor to get well. According to the last
census there were in igoo over 200,000 persons actu.-llly en-
gaged as physicians and druggisis in the task of treating the
sick and selling them medicine, and this takes no account of
nurses, hospital attendants and others who may be legitimate-
ly charged to the natiouls health bill. The expense of sup-
porting tllis army of health resiorcrs is enormous. In addi-
tion the boards of health and quarantine establisllrnents make
another bill of expense. The sale of proprietary medicines
is immense; great fortunes have been made in that business.
w
It would be no exaggerated estimate to say that one-filth of
the one billion dollars expended in advertising in the United
States, is paid in exploiting medicines and health food.
FORTUNES IN WAITING.
In spite oi the numerous inroads made on this earthls
great store of wealth, diamonds, gold, oil, gas, coal, iron and
other materials, recent investigations have brought to light
the interesting fact that treasure Gelds containing fabulous
wealth still remain intact.
Investigations have proved, says the London Chronicle,
for instance, that huge areas of tile door of tlle Pacific are
strewn thick with immense deposits of nodules of pure mail-
ganese. Invent a practicable and economical method of re-
covering it, and the individual who docs so will at once he-
come rich beyond the dreams of avarice.
The most crying need of to-day is 3 snbsiilntc for Para
rubber. It is certain to be discovered sooner or later.
Mallcable glass was iliallufactured and used by the Rom.
ans nearly two thousand years ago. But the secret has been
lost. It seems odd that no oue,in this age of iucclianical
progress has been able to re-discover the method of manu-
facturing a tough and unbreakable glass. Whoeversucceeds
in doing so and making the discovery economically uscfulwill H
reap a great reward.

too, the list of wants unsupplicd is endless. Jewelers, for
instance, are still quite without any safe method of Exing
pearls on jewelry, such as rings, where the gems are mounted
without a surrounding setting.
Work is honorable. It is noble, and he who engages in
respectable labor is 21 nobleman. VVork has its origin in
divinity. The Creator loved labor so much that hefashloned
infinite wisdom and grace that it is the only example of per-
fection. His thoughts the while were pure, unselfish, loving.
Having been loved into existence by this sacred force, the
stars and planets otcy His will in pcrloruiiug their myster-
ious revolutions through distant renlms of space.
So in the name ofthe first artiiicer, let us be diligent and
interested in our pursuits, and let us try with all our native
genius and skill at our command to make our works excel in
quality and beauty-make them models of perfection.
No one admires an idler. Busy people have no time to
spend with hini. He is shunned by all earnest inrndedworlp
ers. He becomes a target for the jester, the butt of ridicule
and an object of contempt. Being so lowly estimated he is
certain that his fellow-beings have no sympathy, no love for
him and reasons quite rightly when he concludes that he is
ostracized, that his life is cut oii from the li
