VIRTUE'S VANITY SIDE.
A Sp rlttn virtue, says the Washington Post, seems to
have tllc iiitiercittqltalityof tnakingits possessor a 45-calibre,
bore of the u-tirst sort. Take the man whose supreme if not
ottly virtue lies in the fact that he takes a cold water bath
I2t'(ry lutirtiitigtlte whole year round You meet him in the
car, in the street, in the course of business, anywhere, and no
matter what the topic may be at the start, the conversation is
lionntl to llltlmle an accotint-quite incidental of course-oi"
how on the irnstitst of mornings lie lrolics in the ice-cold ‘
lvater just as in comes from the hydrant.
Then there's the man who walks down to his office every
niorninu, rain or snow, in sunshine and in storm.
itit his home front his oihce the more he will talk about it
and he will tell you that he has become so accustomed to it
that the only time he can get an extra thrill out of it s when
the streets are deep with snow and the wind is blowing it
liurriczuie.

not a criniiticll, simply because the law does not designate his
offense as ll crime. But it is admitted that the law has its
defects. Nothing can approach the look ofsuperiority on the
race of the early riser. He has found the only road to health
or wealth. The books he has read before breakfast would, if
collected in a heap, make the Congressional Library look
siilal .
There are some who place in the tirst rank of this group "
that rtig;;eil,li.1rtly,vigol-ans, (‘till-blooded gentleman who can't
brciltllc in a room iinless all the windows and rloors are open.
The lower the pressure of steam in the radiator, the lower “.
the mercury in its tithe and the wilder the play of the winds
over the roofs and around the corners, the more insistent is he
that you are itnpcriliug your very life by not occupying an
ofhcc ivitle open to every wind that blows.

DON'T THROW STONES.
It has llPC0l]le quite the thing among the worldly wise in
these days to criticize the churches and church people.
Men who seek to justify their own actions, point with glee at
the church member who has gone wrong and say “I told you
so “ ti these same told you so fellows may be infinitely
worse morally than the object of their scorn, but they feel
called upon to associate the man's downfall with church m<’.‘lll- ’
bersliip
Hypocrites in the church? Why, sure. And in every
other organization and instittition, for that matter, But tile
church nit-tubers are not all hypocrites, and there is not arnan ',
or uoinaii aiiiongthe critics who does not know of at least -
one swect character whom they can point to and say “There's
a (:lll'l$l.l-TIL" Why then criticize the church hecause of one
member who fails to live up to the high standards.
The bank president who went wrong probably had no busi-
ness in the church which carried his name on its books.
Might just as well condcnin all the residents of a certain
town lit-callse you know of one scoundrel who lives there.
This fault finding and criticizing is a poor business at best
in any line or sphere of life and will bring little satisfaction,
especially if the stone thrower hangs up in agreenhouse.
