PROTECTION AT IIOME.
Now that the election is over and the great issue has been
dcci<lcrl, tliecmilltry will setllerlnwti to business and trade guy“
will go booliiiiig along.
The voice of the people has clillcd Roosevelt to hold the
reins of govt-rliiiit-lit ztgziin, and as Protection is one of the
strongest points in the present Atliiiiuislration, the people of
this country, with Roosevelt still at the helm, will remain
under tlll: banner of Protection, which has in the past brought
such bountcoiis prosperity. As in mitioiial issues, why not
let us apply the same rule to oiirbiisilicss riglltlit home?
In the last ten years Arrltiiore has doubled its population,
and certainly its business possibilities should have likewise
increased. Real estate dealers liiid builders have had great >
cncorrragciiiciit during the past yc.1r,and as fast as houses
are built thcy no sold, which gives ainplc proot that Ardmor
has become .1 Izlvorile aiiiong those seeking fora place of resi-
dence
Co
Those who have settled down among us, and also those
who have long been residents of the place, certainly enjoy
. . . . d
very rlolrgluinl surrotlrldings‘ and conditions. Does the ques- “"
tiou ever collie to them in what imiuiicr these conditions are
made possible? The pi0l]L‘L‘l'S of Ardmore who have for
years struggled to make it what it is today are largely
responsible tor its prcscnt prosperous condition, and many of
these are now the rcprcsentlltive business men of the place,
and it is but fair that the people ivho have worked in the past
to bring about these good Couditiorts should now receive the
patronage of those who enjoy the results of their efforts.
That this is nnt done is evidenced by the number of delivery
wagons (rota the city which nnilcc thcir senii-weekly rounds
tllrougli our streets and also by the number of unlicensed
vendors who are freely patronized by our people. Neither of
these pay onc dollar or taxes to keep up the roads over which "
they drive, nor to iiiliiiitaiii oilr schools or our other public
institutions. Every dollar spout with them impedes the on- Q‘
ward progress of our town.
There are people living among us who spend their money
elsewhere. Thcy patrouixctlic city grocer, buy their commu- ,,2; re
tatiou tickets at Broad Street Station, their postal cards and
stttulps at the Pliillidclpliizi Post Office, have their marketing
sent out by train. pay no taxes, and yet send their children
to our schools. This is certainly an unfair principle. There
not business niithinkingly. To these,
as well as those who sliirk the responsibility and duties of

ci Lellslllp, let us ask bllt .1 reasonable amount of considera-
r
tiou from them for thc hllsincss men of the town in which
they reside, and that they will bear in iliiud that every dollar
Spent in Ardliiorc will help to milko it more desirable as a
place of residence, and bring to us even greltter advantages
than we now enjoy.
UP TO YOU.
THE splendid array of bc:int'f ii and useful articles which
for one week will be on cxhi on at the Fireman's Fair in
Masonic llall, wliich will ujtcu to-day, is well worth seeing,
even if a purchase is not intended. The men and women who
have been working forwccks to make the Fair a success are
now rcady to welcome you to ivliat will undoubtedly be the
finest and largest exhibition of the kind which has ever been
held in Ardlllore. The llielubers of the Merion Fire Company
believe that the people will attend the Fair and make their
purchases and in this way contribute towards making ita suc-
cess. They have done thc-ir part and llave done it well. It
remains for the people of our towli to do the rest.
..
USE A BROOM.
warn Ardmore was without the luxury of sidewalks ‘
there was much uiifavnrable comment on the condition of the
hy.paths which scrveri in that capacity. We doubt if resi-
dents in any other town of its size who enjoyed the benefit of
sidewalks would keep them in tliedirty condition whicll some
of these in olir town are now in. Not only do they present a
slovenly appear.-liire, but are a menace to pedestrians, from
the large number of leaves which, being allowed to remain,
decay, and become aslippery pitfall. The use of a broom on
the sidewalks would ccriainly bring comfort and satcty, to say
nothing of the iniproveuicut to property.
SPEED OF AUTOMOBILES.
. . ' 1
AN automobile club of Plttshurg, composed of a number ‘
of wealthy man who run machines for pleasure, has taken a ‘Wm
novel, but highly colulucudablc, staud upon the question of
speed. So inccuscd have they becniue over the many viola-
tions of the spccd law, and rca ng what a prejudice it is
creating and what an iiljitry it is working upon the proper
enjoyment of the pastime, tllat they have decided to offer a
reward of 5250 for each and every person convicted of over-
spceding zlutoniobilcs. In this Wily they hope to be able to
suppress the practice by making omcials more vigilant in
their duties. This is one of the ltiost hopeful signs of the
times It indicates that these automobile owners have the
proper conception or their rights and privileges. They real-
.
ize that a machine is made for pleasure, to be run at a mod.
erate rate of speed ovcr the higliways, and that it is not to be
driven at the rate of twenty, thirty or forty miles an hour,
endangering the lives of their fl.-llow-c ens.
