SAVE YOUR PENNIES.
tve notice a very plain aunouncernelrt under the above
ca,,,,,,,, displayed on tlle telle-r's tvindotv of the Illerion Title
and Trust Company. Tlle little notice inspired it desire on
our part to know more about the ruetllod erllpltlyetl by the
company whereby the principle laid down by Ilelljarrlin
Franklin that “by taking care of the pennies the dollars will
take care of tllernselres" was to be exenrplifiud through the
medium of the penny savings banks.
Our researches are rewarded by the following irlforlrratiorl
obtained from the printed mutter given out with the little
banks and from tlle officers of the cornpmly: For a deposit
of one dollar, a very pretty little steel box or I) rk is rcllletl to
a depository in which can be placed such savin;;s as can hr
spared from time to time. The little box cannot be opened
unless presented at the odice of the Trust Cornpany, when the
amount of the savings (if aggregating five dollars or more)
will be placed to the credit of the party holding the auxiliary
bank, and bear interest at the rate of three per cent. per an.
num, and the bank returned to be refilled by the lessor, Thr-
whole amount thus deposited can be wirlrdrarvn at any time
upon giving the regular fifteen days‘ notice which applies to
all three per cent. accounts. The bank can be returned at any
time and, if in goad order, the one dollar deposited at the time
of issuing it will be returned.
We think the plan an admirable olle to elrcollrngc saving
by children or even older persons who have oclrl uicklcs or
dimes which might be saved up to the five-tlollnr requirement
and not missed, and we are sure that the fact that one has .1
bank account, be it ever so little, would be a plezrsnnt tllirly,

REFORM IN DIET METHODS.
The proposed system of Major VVilliam H. Bean is all ef-
fort to solve the food problem that is certain to attract lnuclr
attention, and, probably, to point the way to better metliods
'rv‘n Notwithstanding the dcvcloplncllt of sciclllihc
discovery in almost every direction, there has been very little
progress in this particular in the course of a half-century.
Cooks and housekeepers generally cling to old systcllls
with the most remarkable tenacity. They will not permit
any innovations upon the customs that have been in vogue
from time immemorial, and any stir ill the direction oflr<l-
vancemeut is usually met by the most cleterurined opposition.
The foundation principle of Major Bean's system-that
the plainest food scientificall prepared and cooked is more
nourishing and more palatable than the so-called delicacies
of the season, crowded into the stomach and relished only
because they are expeusive- appears to be worthy of all ac-
ceptatiou.
His suggestion that there be a return to the corn meal diet
that was so popular with our forefathers, in preference to
buying the costly and unsatisfactory breakfast foods so<
called, which have nothing palatable about them, and which
seem tolacl-t the very important quality of nourishing the
physical nature, should begivell at fair trial if only to put an
end to a species of extravagance that has no reasonable ex-
cuse for its continuance. .
There are many ways in lvhicll the products of cortl can be
prepared so as to make them palatable. There can be no
question as to its nourishing qualities. Its value as food for
the domestic animals is proof positive as to its Inlltritive im.
portance. Perfect cooking is of the highest value in this
connection. There can be no doubt that expensive living is
merely a fad, and that most families expend annually two or
three times as much in this directioll as they should, thus
preventing any outlay for other purposes which go far
towards making life worth living.
In his advocacy of simpler and more inexpensive methods
of living. Major Bean has grappled a problem that should
not be given up until some progress is made in its solution.
He has demonstrated by actual experiment that it is possible
to live and thrive on fifteen cents a day, while an ordinary
meal in most families costs more for each person, as well us
affording less satisfaction to the participant, and less nour-
ishment for his physical nature. The food systenl and the
cooking system of the present dry are the most unsatisfac-
tory that could be devised, being based upon ignorance of
, the requirements of humanity, and they should be reformed
-if it be possible, some rational plan being substituted. It will
do no harm to put in practice a few of Major Bean's sugges-
tions with a view of ascertaining how fur they are bl
