Irish Catholic Benevolent Union
——OF THE——
UNITED STATES AND CANADA.
OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY,
@Z11 SANSOM STREET,
Philadelphia, Septenber 6th, 1892.
TO AFFILIATED SOCIETIES :
The Twenty-fourth Annual Convention has just passed into history, leaving behind a record superior
in many respects to its predecessors.
It determined upon pushing the work of organizing new societies in every part of the country where a
representative could reach, and it provided the means to do this work, and in addition—and better than all
else—a thoroughly-aroused organizing spirit was reflected in every act of the Cortvention.
Your part of this great work is to appoint, at once, an Organizer or an Organizing Committee to organ-
ize societies in every locality within your reach, and the Union will allow that Organizer or the Committee,
for its expenses, twenty dollars for every society they organize of not less than thirty members. Please
appoint this Committee at once, and send their addresses to the General Secretary, so that the national officers
may have direct communication with them. We must not stop until every city and town in America feels
-the influence and helpfulness of the I. C. B. U., and all who assist in the good work will surely have God’s
blessing as a reward for their labor. We are not working for the applause of the public; our mission is
among working people, to whom, instead of alms, we bring the glad news that by banding together they
can help each other in sickness and distress ; five dollars that comes from our societies into the sick-room is
worth twenty dollars coming as alms.
What our societies give comes as a right, and self-respect and independence are not wounded, while what
comes as charity carries with it a sting that takes much of its sweetness from it.
The extension of our work depends largely upon our own members, and your share is the appointment
of a good organizer or committee to assist the Union officers in your locality.
Hoping you will hear us for the cause we represent, we are
Yours fraternally,
Jae Uy
President.
N. B.—Please notify me of the action taken, and give the names and addresses of the committee or of
the Organizer you appoint. If there are any members or ex-members of your Society in New York, Chicago,
Buffalo, Detroit, or any other of the large cities, send us their names and addresses.
Fraternally,
MARTIN I. J. GRIFFIN,
git Sansom Street, Philadelphia. Secretary I. C. B. U.
