To the Societies of the Union and Delegates to the St. Louis Convention:
The Convention will meet in the City of St. Louis on Wednesday, August 2oth,
at noon, in the Hall of the Knights of Father Mathew, opposite the Exposition Building,
13th and Olive Streets, after High Mass at St. Jolin’s Church, worn and Chestnut Streets.

As delegates will be called upon for a report from their societies, it is desired that such
reports present to the Convention features of special usefulness which experience has demon-
strated to be of value, and which, if brought to the attention of representatives of other
societies, would enable them to consider and adopt similar regulations in their societies. If
the membership of the society has increased, the cause thereof or the means whereby it was
secured may be of practical value to other societies. If a decrease has come in past year,
what causes mainly contributed to the loss, whether in the management of the society, or by
reason of its laws, or mainly by the lack of interest in the purposes of the orgauization, or
indifference as to ‘personal need of the benevolent or other features of the society.
Are there any special features in your society’s Constitution or By-Laws which experience
has shown the special value and usefulness of as contributing to the stability of the society or
increasing its power for good, or tending to the increased unity and brotherhood of the mem-
bers. Let the Convention know the strong points ¢ of your organization so that others may be
induced to adopt them for the welfare of the peo
If the society was once much stronger in membership and in money than it now is, let
other societies know wherein was the cause of the lessening of numbers and decrease in funds,
and what experience thereby has shown to have been the weak point in the organization’s
plan, system or laws.
as your society during the past year been of marked usefulness to its members, to the
Church, school or community ?
iat has it done that gives the members special satisfaction ?
If it is small in membership, i is this owing to laggardness or indifference, or a desire to be
exclusive and select in membership, or an unwillingness to add new comers to partake of the
results of the saving of others for years past?
These are but hints of the form of report delegates are expected to make. A mere state-
ment of membership and funds is not all that is desired, as such a report will already be on
the Union’s recor
We need to develop more year by year the usefulness of the Irish Catholic Benevolent
Union, It has twenty-one years of the rich wealth of good done to its credit. Now let us
endeavor to make its manhood more glorious by works for the good of our people and for the
welfare of our Church.
Societies not represented by special delegates are urged, by their President and Secretary,
to communicate with the St. Louis Convention, not only fraternal greetings but words of advice,
or recommendations tending to the welfare of the Union and the good of thesocieties. Address
all comnptup ications to this office until after August 15th, when I may be communicated with
at the Lindell Hotel until the close of the Convention on the evening of August 21st.
ecretaries will please see that the July report of their society has beeu sent me, and the
annual per capita tax paid, not later than August roth.
Delegates will ascertain if such reports and tax have been sent in prior to that date.
Please report the name of the delegate of your society, and kindly hand him this circular
so he may be informed of arrangements at St. Louis.
Delegates and others attending the Convention are entitled to return at one-third fare, by
getting from the Railroad Agent where ticket is bought to St. Louis, a certificate that full
fare has been
