LRISH Carmonte BENEVOLENT UNIOx,
. i Or THE UNITED STATES
j JOFEICE OF THE SECRETARY,
No. 711 Sansom Street.
To the Memioers of Societies of the L C. B.U.:
BreTuren:—I send herewith the necessary blanks ‘and forms to set in operation Class B of the
Widows’ and Orphans’ Fund. This Class was ordered to be established by the recent Convention.
Briefly stated, it is to be composed of such members of I. C. B..U. Societies, who, being in good health
and in good standing in their respective Societies, wish to become members of Class B, and obligate
themselves to pay 25 cents upon each assessment, and an assessment will be called upon the death of each
member,
Sixty days from the date of the assessment notice will be allowed for payment. If not then paid,
the delinquent can only be reinstated upon payment of amount due being accompanied by a certificate of
the President and Secretary of the Society that he is in good health and is in good standing in the Society.
(See Article XII of the National Constitution for the full law regulating the Fund.)
The Class B of the Fund will go into operation January Ist, 1883. ° ”
Send me, BEerore that date, a list of the members of the Society who wish to join the Class. . Those
who are members of Class A, and paying five cents upon each assessment, may also join Class B, to pay
twenty-five cents upon the death of any member of Class B.. If members of Class A, and also of Class B,
~Uney ius pay the assessments of cach class as they may be called for.
The unanimity with which this Class was ordered, by the late Convention, to be established, will, I
hope, be endorsed by the Societies, and especially by the Societies whose delegates voted to open this
means whereby much good can be done. _I particularly enjoin upon Presidents and Secretaries the necessity
of watchfulness and care—I will not say, indeed, of honesty—in accepting members of this Class B.
They must be the protectors of the Fund, and enroll no member whose good health they cannot conscien-
tiously declare to be good.
Any one frequently ill, or known to be afflicted with any - disease, must not be accepted, and no
consideration of friendship should cause this principle of howor to be violated. Guided by the experience
in Class A—which I have managed, by your annual re-elections, since January Ist, 1878—I do not fear
any cases of the kind Iam warning you against; but as the inducements are much greater in Class B, I
take this as opportunity to strengthen the resolves of the President and Secretary, that being made known
to the members, they may be deterred from applying if they are not “in good health.”
If your Society joins, it must send one dollar, unless it is at present a member of the Fund for Class A.
It must send with the first list of names a sum equal to twenty-five cents for each name. Use the large
blank form for the first list.
All whose names are enrolled January Ist, will be entitled to the benefits of the Fund. Notice will
be sent of the first death in the membership, Then, within sixty days, send twenty-five cents for each
member, and subsequent notices will be sent for succeeding deaths.
If explanations of the law or system are needed, I will promptly reply.
Fraternally,
Secretarv TI. C.. B. U.
