The following. statement of the
number of towns raided and destroyed
by English troops in Ireland is issued
by the Friends of Irish Freedom Na-
tional Bureau of Information, Wash-
ington, D. C.: ' -
Sir Hamar Greenwood, Chief Sec-
retary for Ireland, has stated in a pub-
lished interview that “the number of
alleged reprisals” by the English-
controlled and armed constabulary in
Ireland “is few and the damage done
exaggerated.” General Sir Nevil
Macready has said that the English
troops in Ireland, which he attempts
» to distinguish from the militarized po-
lice, have been concerned in only three
cases of “reprisals.” Despite the
storm of protest which -these acts of
violence in Ireland have raised in
every part of the world, the English
Government has refused to offer any
' definite evidence in regard to the part
played by its troops in the sabotage of
Ireland. Lloyd George said that “cer-~
tain cases” were being “carefully in-
vestigated.” In all their public state-
ments English officials have attempt-
ed to minimize the amount of damage
already done to life and property in,
Ireland, even while threatening still
more severe oppressive measures: in
the future.
From the following summary of the
activities of the English Military Oc-
cupation in Ireland, from the sack of
Fermoy in September, 1919, until the
end of September, 1920, it will be
seen that the number of so-called re-
prisals which Sir Hamar Greenwood
has characterized as “few” comprises
in reality well over 100 towns com-
pletely or partially ruined by armed
English forces and includes in some
cases one town revisited and terror-
ized on several occasions. The list is
taken from that published recently in
Dublin by the Irish Bulletin, the offi-
cial organ of the Republican Govern-
ment, and from well authenticated ac-
counts printed in English and Irish
newspapers.
