Waar Depa:
No. 10 West Fourth Street.
P.O. Box 5141.
New York, November 2, 1868.
Dear Sir anp Broruer :
‘Among the records of this office your mame appears as that of one who has taken an
active interest in promoting the cause of Ireland; but not having heard from you lately, it is natural
to conclude that you do so no longer. For this abandonment of an object so. truly laudable and holy
there is no justifiable excuse for any Irishman professing to have the welfare of his country at heart,
as it is his imperative duty to persevere in his efforts for her redemption until they shall have been
crowned with complete success. Notwithstanding the repeated attempts made by self-seeking men to
disrupt and destroy our organization, it was never, during any period of its existence, so strong in
numbers and resources, or as capable of affecting its purpose, as it is to-day. The breach made in its
ranks by the actions of imbecile and dishonest leaders is rapidly closing up and will soon be filled.
We have a treasury steadily increasing
g, our arms are now being converted into the most improved
pattern of breech-loaders, and we have a well-trained and disciplined Army ready and willing to use
them, whenever ordered, against the red-coated mercenaries of Ireland’s hereditary foe. We are
earnestly and resolutely pursuing the only practicable and true path which leads to Irish Liberty, and
every preparation possible under the circumstances is being made to take the field at the earliest
practical moment. In view of these facts, Brother, I would exhort you by every endearing tie, by
your love of Liberty and Motherland, to renew your efforts in her cause, and so sure as I am now
writing you, the day is not far distant when the Green Flag, the cherished emblem of our native land,
shall be flung aloft to the breeze, and never furled till Independence, and the Divine Right of Self:
Government are forever secured to our now suffering and oppressed country.
The Seventh National Congress of the Brotherhood will convene at Philadelphia on the 24th inst.,
when the resources, plans and prospects of the Organization will be laid before the assembled
Delegates.
As soon as you place yourself in communication with this office, copies of Financial Reports, and
other documents showing the present condition of the Organization will be sent for your guidance and
information. If there are any arms in the possession of either yourself or any of your friends, or any
of the Circles in your neighborhood, please report the quantity, quality and calibre to these Head-
Quarters at once.
Yours fraternally,
J. W. BYRON,
Col. and Asst. Adjt.-Gewl F. B:
