182 WiTtH THE MAKERS OF SAN ANTONIO
tisfactory possession, with the fol-
lowing boundaries noted: N, par-
ochial church; E, Acequia Madre;
S, street to creek; and W, Calle
Real, from above. This grant was
apparently re-established in part,
in September, 1782, in favor of
Juan and Domingo Péres, heirs of
Joseph. Others also participated in
the original tract, at about this
same date. The old Joseph Péres
homestead, at the southwest cor-
ner of the block, facing S on Do-
lorosa St., was inherited by Ger-
trudis Péres, wife of José Cassia-
no; and in turn, by their son, Ig-
nacio Cassiano. The old house was
destroyed by fire during the days
of Ignacio’s POssession, but his
father had it rebuilt for him. The
contract for the new building was
with Fries and Kampmann, dated
April 6, 1852. Fifteen years later,
1867, Ignacio Cassiano sold the
property to August Fretelliere and
Theodore Gentilz; then the former
sold his interests to James P.
Hickmann, as well as did Gentilz
in time.
On April 6, 1778, an original
grand was re-granted; and Flores
St., was established and widened.
Along it, at the SE cor. of Galan
St., was granted to Ignacio Estra-
da, a soldier of the Presidio, who
had been living in a jacal at the
back of the church, and who had
consequently lost his property, when
the new street was opened (Sp.
Ar., II, 445). South of this grant
was another, to Gertrudis San-
chez, wid. of José Ximenes Cisne-
ros (Ibid., 323, 568). The NE cor.,
at Dolorosa St., was granted to
Francisco Menchaca_ (Ibid, II,
235). The Pérez-Casanova home-
stead remained in possession of
the Pérez-Casanova. It was the E
boundary of the Menchaca grant.
The next was a long strip of land,
extending from the Alley (Galan
St.), to Dolorosa St., where it
fronted with 6 v. This was granted
to Domingo Pérez, September 15,
1782 (Ibid., 320). The center of
the block had been granted by
Governor Ripperda, to Pedro Fuen-
tes. One shallow lot, fronting
11 varas on Dolorosa St., was
granted to Bonifacio Hernandez,
September 10, 1782, where he had
his jacal ([bid., III, 65). A plot 19
v. deep, fronting on the alley, was
transferred to José Antonio Busti-
No y Cevallos by Francisco Perez,
June 8, 1781 (Ibid., 464). Francis-
co Pérez retained the plot just S,
east of Bonifacio Hernandez, run-
ning along Dolorosa St., and front-
ing on the Main Plaza.
