to tell as you go on with this controversy. Slandered you? It is im-
possible, as the people will learn, if not from what we say, from your
own filthy communications.
RESIDENT'S REPLY.
For the history connected with the following reply, we refer our
readers to the introduction to this work, where all the facts may be
learned. Publication was denied by the Mferrimac Valley. Visitor,
for good reasons, because Time, of its own accord, revealed the sup-
posed secret. Jtestdent considered it an injury to the community to
leave weak arguments against important truths unanswered, or even,
by inaction, to silently sanction secret, dishonorable workings,
unequalled in the annals of journalism, and therefore he published,
in the form of a circular, the following reply. While the Visitor
trenulously but triumphantly announced “No Resident to-day,” in
order to avoid, if possible, the shadow of the advancing cloud, the
following reply was read and appreciated by thousands. It came
unexpected to the journalists, aud unwelcome, because it had been
minutely calculated that it should never appear. Its appearance
. confirmed: public opinion, and public opinion produces a disastrous
effect upon anything dishonorable.
TO THE PUBLIC OF NEWBURYPORT.
For reasons known to every one in Newburyport, the Merrimac
- Valley Visitor has refused to publish our reply to the article in the
Newburyport Herald of Tuesday, 23d inst., and therefore we adopt
this method of presenting it to the public.
Should the Merrimac Valley Visitor impugn our communication, °
We present to the people of Newburyport the following, which is the
exact verbatim communication sent to the Merrimac Valley Visitor
for publication. Our communication was returned with the follow-
ing note from the editor, which sufficiently explains itself: —
Newsuryrort, Noy, 25, 1875.
Rey. Mr. McNurry,— You could hardly have expected that I
should publish this, and therefore any remarks upon it are unncc-
"essary, - Gro. J. L. Conny. ,
