vaults. These vaults will rise to the height of fifty-six feet to
the crown and will rest on polished green granite columns twenty-
two inches in diameter and twenty-two feet high, having orna-
mental carved capitals. '
At the crossing of the nave a11d transepts the plan develops
into an octagon eighty-two feet in diameter. This octagon will be
Hanked with double square-faced colunms of polished green marble.
In the pendentive faces will be marble mosaic emblems of the
four Evangelists, and under them in sculptured niches will be
statues of the four Doctors of the Church.
The wall surface of the dome base will be inlaid with poly-
chrome tiles, mosaic inscriptions and faience terracotta sculp-
tured bands with the ceiling laid out in twenty-four panels. The
twelve panels on the Epistle side will bear carved inscriptions from
the Old Testament, and in the twelve on the Gospel side will be
inscriptions from the New Testament.
Just below the main arch, over the altar table in the groined
vault of the sanctuary, will be a marble mosaic of the parish patron,
St. Francis de Sales.
The sanctuary will be of great beauty. The side walls will be
wainscoted in colored marbles and above will be ornamented
faience terracotta decorations in panels carrying the emblems of
the twelve Apostles and inscription in Latin of the Apostles’ Creed.
On the Epistle side of the sanctuary above the oratory will be
three openings arched and supported on marble columns. Above
these smaller arches will be a large one spanning the three, and the
space between will be filled with a representation of the Epiphany.
On the Gospel side the space will be filled by a representation of
“The Descent from the Cross.” Under the rose window above the
altar will be a glass mosaic of the “Resurrection” and in the arched
ceiling the “Transfiguration.” The floor of the sanctuary will
be of marble mosaics in Byzantine patterns and containing in-
scriptions from Holy lVrit.'
The nave ‘and transept side walls will contain the sculptured
terracotta frames for the Stations of the Cross and the side panels
will have emblems of the Passion and of the Blessed Virgin.
