when the famed edifice was
crowded to its capacity, and
many had to be refused ad-

The Rev. William J. Haley,
a cousin, served as deacon,
and the Rev. Frederic F. Lan-
she, a classmate, was sub-

Joseph M. Corr was master of

to Dr. Gibbons, his family and '
friends. .
Doctor 0’Donnell paid elo-
quent tribute to the priest-
hood ln general, and, in a spe-

with the laymen has made an
indelible impression upon the
Diocese and spread even be-

A highlight of the occasion
was the reading of the Apos-

Father, Pope Pius XII, has
graciously imparted to you his
special Apostolic Blessing on
the occasion of the twenty-

omen of abundant heavenly
graces.
“It is the wish of the Su-

Receive Communion
Almost 100 men attended the
Annual Communion of the
Sacred Heart Group, held in
the Sacred heart Chapel, 1819
Arch Street, on Mother's Day.
Immediately following the
Mass, which was celebrated by
the Rev. John G. Fallon, Di-
rector of the Catholic Youth
Association, breakfast was
served in the main hall of the
building.
Leo T. Connor, Esq., son of
John M. Connor, one of Mal-
vern’s Pioneers, and himself a
member of the James E. Cor-
coran,Group, was the princi-
pal speaker. His address was
thought provoking in that he
challenged the men present to
live up to the ideals taught at
Malvern if they are to make
any impress on the rampant
ills of the present day.
Bernhardt Mosler, an asso-
ciate captain of the group, pre‘
sented carnations to all pres-
ent. Dr. Frank H. l-lodgson,
C. A. Captain, presided, and
announced that reservations
for the retreat scheduled for
June 4 were already closed.
.The prayer closing the exer-
clses was offered for the re-
covery of Associate Captain
James M. Collins, who was un-
dergoing treatment in the
Misericordla Hospital.

ing in the Mcclees Galleries,
1807 Walnut Street. It is a gift
from Michael Francis Doyle,
Esq., who desired to present
something of a lasting nature
to mark the anniversary of
Doctor Gibbons, and it is ex-
pected that it will hang in the
new dining room.
Congratulations!

WILLIAM M. LENNOX
coureeay Ercninll Bulletin
As we are about to go to
press, word comes that Exec-
utive Vice President William
M. Lennox was highly honored
by St. Vincent's College, La-
trobe, Pa., through the con-
ferring upon him of the degree
of Doctor of Laws, on Sunday,
May 30, 1948.
Right Rev. Archabbot Alfred
Koch, O.S.B., president of the
college, presided at the exer-
cises and conferred the degree
upon Mr. Lennox in virtue of
his outstanding work over a
long period of years in the field
of Catholic lay activities.
Archabbot Koch lauded the re-
cipient for the high standard
of his leadership in so many
Catholic fields, particularly
the fraternal, through the
Knights of Columbus, and the
-religious through his active
association with the Retreat
Movement.
‘ Following the awarding of
the degree, Mr. Lennox made
the address to the graduates
and, coincidentally, his talk
was upon “Leadership." He
stressed the need for enlight-
ened leadership, particularly
Catholic lay leadership, for the
upbuilding of our Nation to
counteract the false ideologies
now running rampant.
Besides his active work for
the Retreat League, Mr. Len-
nox is presently serving as a
member of the’Supreme Board
of Directors of the Knights of
Columbus, as well as State
Deputy Supreme Knight of the
Pennsylvania ‘Council of the
same body. He also is president
of the K. of C. Auto and Travel
Club, and is actively engaged
as a. member of the Board of
Directors of the Big Brothers
Association and in the Boy
Scout movement.
All Men of Malvern join in
expressing heartfelt congratu-
lations to one who for many
years has given inspired lead-
ership to the Retreat Move-
ment both locally and na-
tlonally.
Mark 15th Year
when C. A. Captain Thomas
W. Muirooney led his group to
Malvern on April 23 it marked
the 15th annual visit of the
Wilmington Men of Malvern to
St. Joseph's-in-the-Hills. Be-
cause of this, and because of
the fact that the original
group has numbered 15, it was
decided to make the retreat a
memorial to five of the number
who had been called to their
reward: Philip Butler, Frank
Jeandcli, Michael Mealey, Pa-
trick Mulrooney and John
O'Connell.
Two of Captain Mulrooney's

Retreat Master
On Anniversary
Bishop McCormick
Presidcs at Affair
ln Bcllevue Hotel
“Hail. the conquering hero
comes!" might well have been
said of our beloved Retreat
Master as he entered upon the
stage of the hotel ballroom on
Wednesday evening, May 26,
to be greeted most vociferously
by the.more than 1000 Men of
Malvern who had gathered to
do him honor on the occasion
of his Sacerdotal Silver Jubi-
lee, presided over by the Most
Rev. J. Carroll McCormick,
D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Phil-
adelphia.
Such a greeting must surely
have warmed Doctor Gibbons’
heart as he looked upon that
sea of faces, lighted by the
gladsome ties of love which
shone forth from eyes that in
many cases were wet with
tears of Joy.
To few mortals is it given to
wield such power over the
hearts of other men, as has
been the wont of the Reverend
Rector of St. Joseph’s-in-the-
Hills, through the years of 1936
and 1948. inclusive. In that
comparatively short period of
thirteen years, though it has
meant half the Jubilarian’s
priestly life, his versatile mind,
his strong will have dominated
the retreat movement which
he has directed so successfully.
Almost beyond belief is the
fact that the number of re-
treatants who visited Malvern
under his regime is in excess
of 75,000, as was mentioned by
Doctor O'Donnell in his ser-
mon at the Mass the preceding
Sunday.
John J. Sullivan, Esq., presi-
dent of the Retreat League
since its inception in 1913,
served as toastmaster, while
the address for the clergy was
delivered by the Rev. William
J’. Lallou, Litt.D.,S.T.D., of the
Catholic University, Washing-
ton, D. C., who was the first
pastor under whom Doctor
Gibbons served after his or-
dinatlon.
Hon. Clare Gerald Fenerty,
Judge of Common Pleas Court
No. 5, was highly laudatory of
the Jubllarlan from the stand-
point of the layman. We wish
that space would permit us to
reprint the addresses of both
these gentlemen, who are
without peers in their chosen
iields.
The honored guest endeav-
ored to deprecate the‘encom-
iums heaped upon him by the ,
orators when the toastmaster
gave him an opportunity to
speak, after first having pre-
sented him with a. purse. the
gift of the Men of Malvern,
who sought to have a personal
part in the ceremonies inci-
dent to the jubilee.
Also in the names of the Men ’
oi’ Malvern, Father Kane pre-
sented the Jubilarlan with a
spiritual bouquet consisting of
many thousands of Masses,
