The Dvina-Niemen Sector
the right wing of v. Below's army drove the
Russians from strongly fortified positions on
the Vilkomierz-Dvinsk road, in the lake dis-
trict west of Uziani; Russian Guard regi-
ments were defeated northwest of Vilna.
The Kotra-Nicmen-Z luianha Sector
After prolonged indecisive lighting. Skidel.
east of the lower Kotra. was linally captured.
but the Russians still oEered resistance to v.
Scholtz's army along the remaining portion of
the line. South of the Niemei. v. Gallwitz
pierced the enemy front east of the lower Zel-
vianka at several points.
Leopold of Bavaria: The Upper Zelur'anka-
‘ Jasiolda Sector
Adjoining v. Gallwitz's right wing. v.
Woyrsch's troops captured the enemy posi-
- tions east of the Zelvianka. on the Volkovysk-
Slonim railway, crossing the river further
southward also; the right wing defeated the
Russians at Kossov.
vv. Mackensen: The .'au'olda-Pripet Sector
The armies advanced on both sides of the
Pinsk railroad.
Volhynia-Eastern Galicia
Von Puhallo crossed the Coryn at Derazno.
the left wing of v. Boehm-Ermolli's army the
Ikwa at Dubno. The Russians again violently
attacked Count Bothmer's army. but were
finally repulsed at all points.
Southern Adriatic Sea
A large British transport was sunk by an
Austro-Hungarian submarine.
Italian Front: Isonzo
Italian attacks against the front between
Flitsch and Tolmein failed.
Turkey: Black Sea
gnerman submarines were active in the Black
ea.

v. Hindenburg: The Duina-Vilija Sector
The Russians were driven back be-
tween Friedrichstadt and Jacobstadt
toward the Dvina; to the South
thereof they retreated in the direc-
tion of Dvinsk, pursued by the Ger-
mans. The Russian front west and
southwest of Dvinsk was forced
back everywhere; the railroad con-
nection hetween Dvinsk and Vilna.
was severed at Svenzjany; Vilna
was flanked in the north, thus sepa-
rating the Russian northern army
from the forces operating around
Vilna.
The Kotra-Niemen-Upper Szczara Sector
During the night v. Scholtz broke the enemy's
resistance and, after crossing the Kotra, pur-
sued the enemy toward the Vilna-Lida-Vol-
kovysk railroad. Von Gallwitz repulsed sev-
eral strong counter-attacks along the lower
Zelvianka.
Leopold of Bavaria: The Szczara Sector
East of the Zelvianka and Rozanka, the
enemy retreated toward the Szczara. pursued
by German troops.
v. Machensen: The Jaslolda-Pripct Sector
The Russians retreated along the entire front
and were pursued in the direction of Pinsk.
Volhynia-Eastern Calicia
The enemy was defeated at several points
northwest of Rovno by the right wing of
Puhallo's army. East of Dubno. v. Boehm-
Ermolli's left wing reached the Brody-Rovno
railway, while the right wing was engaged in
bitter struggle at Novo-Alexinietz. Along the
Sereth. the Russians attacked again and again
with superior forces; their violent attacks were
repulsed at the mouth of this river.
Italian Front: honzo
Renewed stubborn enemy attacks on the
Flitsch front proved futile. Four assaults
against the Tolmein bridgehead broke down.
Turkey: Meropolamia
During the preceding ten days. Turkish regu-
lars and volunteers inflicted considerable dam-
age on the British along the Tigris and the
Euphrates.
Western Front:
The Rhine Province,
Lorraine, Baden
a French air squadron shelled Trier. Meet-
chingen. Chateau-Salins and Donaueschingen;
one aeroplane was shot down.
