Civenchy.-The French drive west of Loos
failed. A night attack on the southern slope
of the Loretto height against the communi-
cating road to East Ablain, brought the
enemy into a part of the German first line,
but his later efforts near the crest of the
height proved fruitless. The German coun-
ter-attack south of Neuville brought some
gains and frustrated preparations for a great
drive.

Renewed enemy attacks were repulsed in the
Forest of Le Pretre.
Eastern Front: Baltic Sea
A German airman destroyed a Rus-
sian submarine west of Libau.
