Eastern Front: Lithuania
German troops pursued the retreating Rus-
sians in the forests of Augustovo from Ma-
charce to Kopciovo; German cavalry took
5.400 Russian prisoners during the capture
of Kopciovo.
Carpathian:
Northeast of the Lupkov Pass. between Cisna
and Baligrod. a village was taken from the
Russians after violent fighting.
United States of America
The auxiliary cruiser "Prinz Eitel Friedrich."
which had inflicted severe damage on the
enemy's merchant marine. docked for re-
pairs at Newport News.
Western Front:
Armentiires-La-Bane’:
in a counter-attack the Germans
drove the English back upon the
village of Neuve Chapelle. Thus the
enemy’s attempt to break through
at this point also failed completely,
in spite of enormous sacrilices-ad-
mittedly more than 700 oflicers and
12,000 men.
Champagne
In the Champagne fighting became more ag-
gressive. French attacks at various points
were repulsed with heavy losses.
Eastern Front: Carpathians
Austro-Hungarian troops captured an im-
portant height on the road between Cisna and
Baligrod: Russian counter-attacks broke
down with heavy losses.
Northern Persia
After the Russians had again occupied several
points in Aserbeidshan which had been pre-
viously evacuated by them. the Persian Gov-
ernment repeated its demand for the with-
drawal of the Russian troops from the Prov-
mce.
Eastern Front:
Carpathians
strong Russian attacks failed between the
l.:upkov and Uszok Passes: also in the ter-
ntory occupied by the German Southern
Army on the Zvinin River. in the Opor Val-
ley, and near Vyszkov.
Southeastern Galicia
South of Stanislau the Russians renewed their
attacks. which broke down under heavy
losses. '
Western Front:
Yser Canal
the Germans started a counter-attack near
St. Elox after repulsing attacks by the Eng-

lish which had continued since the beginning
of the month.
Eastern Front: Carpathians
Renewed violent attacks by the Russians,
more particularly north of the Uszok Pass
and on both sides of the'road to Stryj in the
Opor Valley, were repulsed with heavy
losses.
Southeastern Galicia
The Austro-Hungarian counter-offensive com-
pelled the Russians to retreat at several points
south of Stanislau.
Turkey: Dardanelles
During the preceding days no important at-
tacks had taken place. but only ineffectual
attempts at mine sweeping; three mine sweep-
ers were sunk during these operations. The
British cruiser "Amethyst" was severely
damaged from Fort Nagara.
Red Sea
Capt. v.Miicke. with the "Ayesha” crew.
sailed from Hodeida in two ships.
South America
The cruiser “Dresden” was sur-
prised by the British ships “Kent,"
“Glasgow” and “Orama” in the neu-
tral waters of the Chilean island of
Juan Fernandez. As the English,
when their attention was called to
the neutrality of those waters,
stated that they had orders to
destroy the “Dresden” wherever en-
countered, the Commander sank his
ship with the flag unfurled after
landing his crew of 315 men. The
Government of Chile filed a protest
in London.

the Germans occupied English posi-

Champagne
The daily "French attacks at various points
were nearly all repulsed with big losses. The
Germans captured several trenches north of
Beau-Sejour.
Eastern Front: Poland, Western Galicia
‘ Fighting continued uninterruptedly south of
the East Prussian frontier. more particularly
near Lomza and Przasnisz. as well as on the
Austro-Hungarian front in Southern Poland
and Westem Galicia. All Russian attacks
were repulsed with considerable enemy losses.
