West of Craonne, German troops
stormed the French positions on the
northern edge of the plateau, be-
tween the La Creute farm and the
small village called Hurtebise, as
well as to the west and east thereof.
Within half an hour the enemy's
three lines of defense, together with
strong entrenchments on the west-
ern wing, were in German posses-
sion. The French made a stubborn
resistance only on their right wing.
In the cave of La Creute, situated
at about the center of the battle
line, 300 French were surrounded.
They surrendered at midnight.
In the southern sector of the Vosges front
the French undertook fruitless attacks.

A part of the Russian levy of 1915 was
called to the colors.
The German light cruiser "Gazelle" was
damaged by a hostile. presumably an Eng-
lish. submarine. near Arizona (on the island
of Riigen). but succeeded in making Sass-
nitz under its own steam.
After shelling the Russian naval base of
Libau. a naval airship of the Parsifal type
193
was struclr by Russian bullets and fell into
the Baltic near Bcrnaten. about fifteen kilo-
meters south of Libau. Russian ships com-
pletely destroyed the airship and took the
crew prisoners.
On the East Prussian front. violent artillery
engagements toolc place between Lycl: and
Ragnitz. Northeast of Gumbinnen the Rus-
sians again attacked the German cavalry
posts without result.

German troops were successful in engage-
ments northeast of Vloslavec. Southwest of
Tarnov. near Zglobice. Austro-Hungarian
artillery dispersed the enemy forces.
Threatened by an enveloping movement on
both tlanlrs. near the Uszol: Pass. the Rus-
sians retreated. lighting, from the Ung Val-
ley toward the heights above the Pass.
The right wing of the German
southern army advanced toward the
north, into the region surrounding
the sources of the Talabor and Nagy
Ag rivers. Three Russian positions
on the heights south of Toronya
were captured after a furious en-
gagement and counter-attacks were
repulsed.
