Several engagements took place north and
northwest of Sennheim in the forests of the
Vosges which cover the approach to Mul-
hausen. and which up to the end of December
had been occupied only by German and
French outposts. Strong forces had been
brought up by both sides.
Preparations were made for a German at-
tack against the “Hirzstein” (Hill No. 57l.
northwest of Wattweiler). and against the
Hartmannsweilerkopf (Hill No. 956. north
of the Hirzstein), which were both held by
the French.

South and southwest of Mlava, Ger-
man troops attacked and repulsed
the Russians with considerable loss-
es at Konopki (on the Mlava-
Warsaw railway), Radzanovo and
Biezun (on the Vkra) and Sierpz
(on the Skrva).
German artillery shelled Witkowice on the
left bank of the Bzura, five kilometers above
its juncture with the Vistula, and drove the
Russians out of the place.
In southern Bukovina, the two Rus-
sian Army groups of Kirlibaba, on
the road in the valley of the Golden
Bistritz, and of Pozoritta, on the
railway between Kimpolung and
Dome. Watra, advanced upon Jako-
beny. The western detachment at-
tacked the left flank of the Aus-
trians at Czokanestie, six kilometers
northwest of Jakobeny and succeed-
ed in establishing itself in the snow-
filled ravines of the forest, while the
attempts of the eastern detachment
to force the Mestikanestie Pass on
the road between Valeputna. and
Jakobeny, failed. In the evening,
the Austro-Hungarian troops recap-
tured the heights and repulsed the
far superior Russian western detach-
ment upon Kirlibaba with heavy
losses.

The German detachment in the furthest
northern corner of the German East African
coast attacked strong English forces at Jas-
sini at the mouth of the Umba.

the French on the Loretto Height,
west of the road between Bethune
and Arras were driven from a line
of trenches, two hundred meters
long, and lost several machine guns
and some prisoners.
In the forest of La Grurie. in the Western
half of the Argonnes. the French again lost
several trenches.
