While the French quickly reinforced
their troops at Hill 132 between
Cuflies and Crouy in the expectation
of further attacks by the right wing
of the Germans at Soissons, the Ger-
man center and left wing unexpect-
edly advanced at noon over the
plateau between Crouy and Vregny
and stormed the position of the
enemy in a pouring rain. Late in
the afternoon the entire plateau was
cleared of the French, who were
only able to make a stand on the
lowest slopes near the north bank
of the Aisne.
Again strong French forces took the often-
sive in the Champagne, east of Perthes. The
French succeeded in breaking through the
German trenches at several points. but the
Germans instituted strong counter-attacks and
drove them back to their former positions with
heavy losses.
