On September 3,
the President of the French Re-
public, the Government and the
Diplomatic Corps secretly left
Paris for Bordeaux. Only the
American Ambassador, who was
entrusted with the protection of
German and Austrian civilian in-
terests, remained.
In spite of a quieting manifesto published
after the departure of President Poincare.
the Parisians fled from the city by scores.
. e more so as the city council requested the
immediate departure of all non-combatants.
Masses of refugees arrived from Northern
France and took the place of those who had
fled. Most of the newspapers and banks
were also removed from Paris.
Upon receipt of information that
Rheims had been secretly evacu-
ated by the French, a Saxonian
Patrol, consisting of twelve men
commanded by Captain von Hum-
bracht, undertook a reconnaissance
toward the city. The outer forti-
fications were found to have been
evacuated, whereupon the cour-
ageous little band entered Rheims
at 9 p. m., declared the city cap-
tured and held the Burgomaster
as a hostage. They remained un-
molested over night, returning to
their regiment the following mom-
mg.
In their advance the German army took a
rich booty. Von Biilow's army alone re-
ported the capture of six flags, 223 heavy
guns. l l6 field-pieces, 79 machine guns. l66
wagons. and lZ,934 prisoners up to the end
of August.

The British torpedo-boat “Speedy" and the
coast patrol "Linsdell" struck mines 30
miles off the English coast and went down.

The Austrian army. after heroic efforts
against overwhelming Russian odds, evacu-
ated Lemberg in order not to expose the
defenseless city unnecessarily to bombard-
ment. All the authorities. the wounded and
many residents left the city. The Russians.
believing Lemberg still occupied, shelled the
undefended earthworks.
