26 THE KNOW NOTHING ALMANAC;
MISS BUNKLEY AND THE
CONVENTS.
Ir will be remembered that Miss Joss-
rouinn M. Bunxury, of Norfolk, Va., wa3
obliged to make a clandestine exit from the
Convent at Emmettsburg, not long ago. Her
escape was effected in the night, when her
jailers were off their guard, with the excep-
tion of one, a kind of sentinel, but him she
managed to avoid, Of course the ‘ Supe-
rior’’ (very superior) * lady” of the Convent
denies evory charge made by Miss Bunkley,
while the young lady, whose character for
veracity is unimpeachable (especially from
such a source as a Romish Convent), replies
to the denial in a very spirited and able
manner, and intimates that she will prove
all she alleges, by other developments.
The Boston Pilot (a,Romish paper) has
commenced the work of intimidation usually
resorted to on such occasions, and holds up
the fate of one whom it is thought was per-
sccuted to death by the Jesuits, as a terror,
hoping to prevent the publication of any
further information-from Miss Bunkley.
The Boston Olive Branch has taken up
the Romish gauntlet, and breaks a lance in
defence of the “novice.” The fact of the
Boston Pilot having called the Americans
“ Cowards und sons of cowards,” will not
add very much to its lability to be believed
in this country,
The public are looking anxiously for Miss
Bunkley’s expositions, now in the course of
preparation, and shortly to be published.

RHYME AND REASON.
The Priest outwitted.
Tue following lines, itis said, were written
by Luther. They contain volumes of wis-
dom, and will save months of argument, ag
they strike the nail on the head and clinch
it on the other side, at one stroke:
A parent asked a priest his child to bless,
The priest then told the child he must con-
ess,
“ Well,” said the boy, “suppose thatI am

What is your charge?” * To you, ’tis buta

“Do all men pay, and all men make con-

Yes, every man of Catholic profession.”
“To whom do you confess, sir?” Why,
the Dean,
And pay him smartly, too—a whole thir-
“Do Deans confess, sir priest?” * Yes,

And pay the Bishop dearly for it, too.”

“Well,” said the boy, “all this is mighty odd;
And does the Pope confess?” Oh yes, to

‘And does God charge the Pope?” “No,”
quoth the priest, .
“God charges nothing.” Why, then, God

God can forgive, and he is always willing,
To him I will confess (through Christ) and
