THEY SAW THROUGH IT.
AN inmate ofan English workhouse recently applied for :1
new glass eye, his old one having become the worse for wear.
The . medical officer thought him labouring under an
“optical " delusion, and considered a glass eye unneces-
sary; but the perspicacious guardians have ordered one to
be produced at once.
CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY.
IT is refreshing to observe that there is at all events one
“ Rule ” upon which all Irish M.P.s are unanimous-e
namely, the rule of “ My Lady Nicotine,” in furtherance of
which they have addressed a memorial to the Prime
Minister asking for a removal of the present restrictions on
tobaccosgrowing in Ireland.
It is to be hoped the united prayer will be grantede
In any case it will end in smoke.
HARD NUTS.
At the Irish Industrial Conference held in the City Hall
recently a Mr. E. J. Riordan (Cork), speaking of statistics
of imports, said a case had come under his notice in which-
under the sub-heading of nuts, in a general return of fruit-
it was found that the nuts included bolts and iron nuts.
Dead Sea fruit is palatable in comparison with such
consignments, but perhaps, they were only dainties addressed
to some human ostrich.
A SAMPLE FROM THE “CENSORS."
The following resolution was adopted at a recent meeting
of the North Dublin Guardians, acting as a dispensary
board :-“ That we recommend tothe Board that the urban
district be divided between Dr. Mahony and Dr. Gibbs as
follows :eCl0ntarf and half Drumcondra to Dr. Gibbs, the
other half of Drumcondra and Glasnevin to Dr. Mahony;
and that the rural portion of each doctor be taken from
him. ”
Here we have a resolution that has gone through the
different stages of “drafting, polishing, proposing. second-
ing (and possibly “ thirding ”), supporting and adopting. ”
We trust the medical gentlemen concerned will understand
it, and wonder whether the removal of “the rural portion
of each doctor” will involve a serious operation, in the
meantime we present it to our readers as a Christmas
conundrum. When cold, business resolutions can be made
so exquisitely involved, what may be expected from a f‘ fully
choral" meeting with the gentleman of the “piano-wire
speech ” as leading tenor? Why it will be the concert of
the season.
WORSE THAN CHICAGO,
A notice containing the following humane prohibition
was recently posted up in the Valuation Office 2-“ Under
no circumstances must Government messengers as used for
lzmtlzemz.” Might not the “ humanitarians" have added
after the word “luncheon,” the words “or any other
meal ”--and thus preserve the lives of many useful and
harmless civil servants?
