THE stock market is assuming a still
more uncertain tone. The speculative
shares are beginning to swing in wide
ranges. Ilcthlcliem varied -35 points, Bald-
win Locomotive 22 points, Studebaker 27.
Maxwell Motors 19 and Willys-Overland
38 points. Call money ruled about 1%
per cent. This chcapness tempted some
speculative investors to try :1 gamble in the
Anglo-French bonds. They attempted to
buy them on small margins. and then raise
loans on them in the Morgan banks. "To
their sorrow they learned that the banks
would not loan money on the bonds at the
call money rate, but that a rate of 4 per
cent was exacted on such “special loam?"
There is evidently not much of a chance
for making money in these war bonds.
