WASHINGTON’S MESSAGE TO IRELAND.
“Patriots of Ireland! Champions of Liberty in all lands!
Be strong in hope! Your Cause is identical with mine. You are
caluminated in your day; I was misrepresented by the loyalists
of my day. Had I failed, the scaffold would have been my
doom. But now my enemies pay me honour. Had I failed
I would deserve the same honour. I stood true to my Cause
even when victory had fled. In that I merited success. You
must act likewise.”
ENGLISH BETRAYAL AND HYPOCRISY.
“When will Irish men and women abandon their amazing
credulity and cease to believe in the good-will of England
towards Ireland? Is not every page of Ireland’s_ history
studded with English betrayal and hypocrisy.”"—ARTHUR
GRIFFITH before he signed the “Treaty.”
OUR NATIONAL LANGUAGE.
“A Nation should guard its language more than its terri-
tories—’tis a surer barrier, and more important frontier, than

“If you do not know Irish, learn it.”

her own. A patriotic Englishman would, very properly, repu-
diate the right of Germany to control the destinies of his coun-
try, to partition its territory and to compel its public represen-
tatives to swear an Oath of Fidelity to German. Institutions.
Are our people less patriotic than the English, and destitute of
every vestige of national pride, dignity and self-respect? We
are satisfied, they are not; and that consequently they will never
abandon the national struggle for freedom for which the men
of Easter Week gave up their lives..—From I. F. L. Propa-
gandist Literature.
HATRED OF ENGLAND NOT RULING MOTIVE.
Hatred of England, we are often told, is our ruling motive.
It is NOT. I deny that for any moment of my life hatred of
any people has been a ruling motive with me. Hatred never
gets you anywhere. I desire to see the friendliest possible
