in the Diocefe and County of Down, which poiiibly might lince be corrupted into
Dzmdrum. He defcribes it tovlie in the Neighbourhood of Kilclclbia (Kilclifc)
which is in the Peninfula of Lrmlt. But the Certainty of this mull‘ be left to
the Inquiry of others. V‘ .

T. F E R GUS, the Son of ilingus, was ‘of the Blood Royal of Ireland, as
‘being defcendcd from Coelbadimr, King of Ireland, who’ died in 357 [and
was the lai’c Monarch of the Line of Ir.] It is faid he was at lirft Abba: of the
Monaitery of Kil-lrialr, of whiehhe was the Founder; that he. was afterward
made Bifliop of Down‘, in the Government whereof he died on the goth of
M'zzr:l2 583; under which Year, the Annals of Uljltr thus point him out. “ The
“ relt of Fergus, Bilhop of Dromlctbglaji, who founded Kil,-Han.” [It. muft
be obferved, that the Place here called Drama-Ielbglajfr, and in other XVriters
Dtm-da-Ietlwglaji h, is the fame with Down, antiently called Ara:-Ccltair.] As
to his Succefibrs, I confefs I have not been able to difcover the leafi; mention of
any Bilhop of Down for many Centuries after St. Fezgur, except of thefc.
[Fir1gcn, whom the Annals of the Four Mafters cxprelly call, Biihop of Dan.
da-lzlbglafr, and place his Death in 962.]
I‘7I1gbL'I‘fl1fb, who, according to the Annals of the Priory of the Ifland of All-‘
‘Saints, died in ro43.
[Samm!, Biihop of Dawn, who aflilled at a Synod hcld'in’Iralam1, dniio 1096]
And it feems probable indeed, that during almoit all that Period, this See had
no peculiar Bifhop of its own, but was included in the Dioccfc of Comm-.
MALACHYI I. O-MORGAIR.
[Sum 1137. .05. 1148.]
‘Have already given an Account of St. Malacby out of his Life written by St?
E Bernard. It will be enough to obfervc here, that from being Abbat of
Bangor, whichhe had repaired, he was made Bifhop of Camzaf, in the goth
Year of his Age-, and eight Years after Archbilhop of Armagb ; butfthat the
‘third Year ibllowing, he reftgned the Areliiepifcopal See to Gelajiur, his Succef.
for “ and returned (fays St. Bernard) to his own Pariih, but not that of Can-
“ 'Im‘e!b, and for a Reafon worth the Relation. That Diocefc is faid to have
' ‘ had antiently two Epifcopal Sees, and to have been two Bilhopricks , and
“ Mzzlzzcby thought it molt convenient, to have them fo again. Therefore he
divided thefe Bilhopricks into two, which Ambition had united, and allotted
part to another Bifhop, and retained part to himfelf. And therefore he did
“ not go to Carmerctb, becaufe he had already ordained aBilhop for that Sec; but
“ bctook himfelf to Down, and afiigned the Bounds to each Parilh, as they had
“ antiently been.” Thcfe things fell out in the Year 1 137, or (as fome fay) t 13.6.
He died on the fecond of Nweznber n48, inthe Abby of Clay-avail, on his
journey, towards Ram:-, The Reade
the Archbilhops . of Azjzmzgb.
