In 1699, while he fat in the See of IGIIaIo:, he was employed by the Biilibpx
of Irtlmzd to follicit a Cliuf: in the A61 of Refumption, then in Agitation in the
‘Parliament of England, for applying the Profits of all forfeited Reetories im-
propriate, Tythes &'c. for 2'0 Years on the Rebuilding and Repairing fuch Parilll
Churches as the chief Govemour of Ireland, with the confent of the Bilhop of
‘the Diocefe, fhoultl appoint; and afterwards for the perpetual Augmentation of
poor llc&ories and Vicaritlges: In which Affair he had W'eight and Addrefs
enough to fuccced.
From Killalat he was tranflatcd to the Sec of Rapboe in May 1713-, and from
ihence to this Archbilhoprick, in 7aIIuary following -, and foon after was made
one of the Lords juftices of Ireland, in Conjunction with Sir Canjhznlirz Pbippr;
Lord Chancellor, and Dr. 701211 Vefe , Archbilhop of Tuam; ‘,
A. D. 1720 He obtaincd a new Charter for enlarging the Number of the
Vicars Choral and finging Boys for the Choir of Armagb; and the King's Licence
for purchaling more Lands for the Endowment of them. He accordingly laid
out upwards of 4oool in a Purchafe, which he annexed to the antient Eftate be-
longing to the faid Choir; and at his own Expence brought over from England
four Perfons well llilllcd in Church Mufick, whom he fettled in the faid Choir;
He was at the Charge of erecting a fecond Organ lit for the Choir Service; and
as the Organili, who had been before fixed in the faid Church; on a Salary of
thirty Pounds a Year, wasjudged not to be fufiiciently qualified for performing
Choir Service -, he removed hi'm, and procured a more ilcilful Organiltg and fet-
tled thirty Pounds a Year on the old Organiflz, during the faid Officers Life, in
Confideration of the lots of his Place. He purchafed a Ring of fix Bells, (which
were call by the Famous Mr. Ryddal at Gloucrjier) for the faid Church, and fen!
for Artilicers from England to make the proper Frames and Wheels for hanging
them; the Timber, Materials, and Workmanlhip being all paid out of his own
Pocket. While he governed this See he was at the whole Expence of keeping
the Cathedral in repair; and it is eliimated that his Munilicence to this Church
in his Life-time, and by his VVill, amounted in the Whole, to at leaft fevefi
Thouf-and Pounds. His private Charities were alfo very conliderable; But ilfued
with that caution, that there is no coming at an Account of them;
He died in Dublin on the 13th of $7141) 1724, having labourcd under an
iil State of Health for many Years before, his Death, and was buried in Cbrifi

Pounds to be laid out on the Purchafe of lifty‘Pounds a Year for the Qiconomy
of drmagb, which had before little more than paid the Ofiicers of the Church their
Salaries. He ralfo devif-Ed three hundred Pounds to his next Succefibr, towards
purchaling a convenient Houfe, to ferve for Lodgings for his Succeflbrs when
they fhouldhave Occalion to be at Argmagb; but clogged with a Conditionithat he‘
fnould not renew a Leafe in the Poffeliion of Thoma: Dawjbn Efq; of at Houife
in Armagb-, but that the fame fhould come to the See, to ferve as a Dwelling
Houfe for the Archbifhops, of zirmagb; alledging, that he had received full Sa-
tisfaction, that the faid Houfe, formerly known by the Name of Parfon Simon’;
Houfe, was rebuilt and repaired, by the Direction, and at the Expence of Pri-
mate Mzzrfla, for the ufe of himfelf and his Succell'or:;; but that there being no
Writings, the faid Daujm rcfufed to give it up.
