taking possession of his titular ‘tar of SS. Nereus and
Achilles, at Rome, on Palm Sunday, March 20, at 4 P. MM.
delivered the following address:
To our Holy Father Benedict XV. I am beholden
for having assigned to m my titular church this
ncient and historic temple dedicated to SS. Nereus
and Achilles, and entrusted to the care.of St. Philip
Neri’s children,
The Vicar of Christ has brought me into closer touch
with the gentle Apostle of Rome and with his Congrega-
iad dear to the: English-speaking world for many
. but especially for having numbered in its ranks
that ovofeund and original thinker, that master of a
stately style, the great-souled Cardinal Newman.

In the long line of Cardinals, who have held as their
title this monument of early Christianity, stands pre-emi-
nent another son of St. Philip, Cardinal Baroniuis, who
together with Eusebius, is revered as a father of Church
history. By the lure of holiness St. Philip won, formed
and guided him, Having witnessed the fiery imagination
resplendent in hig sermons, he diverted his mind to his-
torical research, for which at first the disciple had no
bent, until at last the Saint moulded him into the peerless
chronicler who has marshaled before our eyes, in living
pictures ithe men, the deeds, the persecutions, the heresies,
he schisms t the struggles and the triumphs of the past.
